”Feast of the Virgen of Chapi”. Many people travel to Chapi to venerate the virgin who is the most important in the region. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Chapi is 45 km from Arequipa. On this day Pilgrims from all over the country and even the Continent come to greet and honour the “Virgin of Purification” now known as the “Virgin de Chapi”. During these important pilgrimages all pilgrims carry big candles made by craftsmen. Those devout Catholics take around 15 hours to walk the 45 km from Arequipa through the night, leaning on rustic walking staffs to reach the deserted spot located at 2,420 meters above sea level. The following day, in Chapi, the virgin is born aloft in a procession over carpets of flower petals. During the night there are numerous festivals of fireworks and sale of foodstuffs. This is the ideal time and place to snack on “Chicharron” (fried pork rind) and “Pan de Omate” (Omate Bread).
