FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Activities and Excursions

  1. ¿What options are there to visit Colca Canyon?
The easiest way of visiting Colca Canyon is to book through a travel agency. Once you get to Arequipa you can easily find one. Most of them offer about the same service: 1, 2 or 3 days of travel. Guided tours are usually between $20 and $25 a day.
More expensive travel agencies offer private tours that are up to three times the price. We recommend that you don’t opt for the 1 day tour, as there is a lot of travelling involved and you don’t get to see as much of the canyon. It is much better to go for two days, stay overnight and then walk the following day.
We also advise to avoid coming during the rainy season, as the canyon is often very overcast, making it impossible to see the beautiful scenery that it offers.

¿Is it possible to go on my own?
Of course it is possible to do it on your own. Lone travellers should read the guides to get more in depth information about the tours. You can get a bus from Arequipa to Chivay (3 to 4 hours) and then catch another bus to reach Cabanaconde (5 hours).

¿What else can I do in Arequipa?
The majority of excursions involve mountain climbing as there are many high mountains in the area, such as el Misti, which is 5,822 metres above sea level. It is a volcano, and is the most popular climbing spot for locals and tourists alike. You can also go for walks through the Valley of the Volcanoes or the Laguna de Salinas (Salinas and Aguada Blanca).
